Who Is the Credit Bureau in South Africa?

“The credit bureau” is not one office or a government department — it’s a handful of registered companies that keep a record of how you handle credit. Here is who they are and what they know about you.

What a credit bureau actually is

A credit bureau is a company that collects and stores information about how South Africans manage credit, and then supplies that information to lenders so they can decide whether to approve a loan, a store account, vehicle finance or a home loan. In short, the bureau keeps the record; the lender makes the decision.

Credit bureaus are private companies, not government offices — but they are tightly regulated. Every bureau must be registered with the National Credit Regulator and must operate within the National Credit Act (Act 34 of 2005), which sets strict rules on what they may record, for how long, and how accurate it must be.

The main credit bureaus in South Africa

There are more than fifty registered bureaus, but four handle the bulk of consumer credit information:

  • TransUnion — the largest and most widely used by South African lenders.
  • Experian — a global bureau with a strong South African presence. Compuscan, once a major independent bureau, was acquired by Experian in 2019 and now sits under Experian.
  • XDS (Xpert Decision Systems) — a South African bureau.
  • VeriCred (VCCB) — another registered South African bureau.

Because not every lender reports to every bureau, each one may hold slightly different information about you — which is why your credit score can differ from one bureau to the next. For a full picture, it is worth checking more than one. Our complete guide to the credit bureaus goes deeper on each.

What information the bureau holds about you

Your credit report is more detailed than most people expect. A bureau typically holds:

  • Your accounts — every loan, credit card, store account, overdraft and cellphone contract.
  • Your payment history — whether you paid on time, late or not at all, usually going back several years.
  • Public records — court judgments, administration orders, debt review flags and sequestrations.
  • Enquiries — a log of who has checked your record and when.
  • Personal details — your ID number, address and contact information, used to make sure your record is not confused with someone else’s.

How the bureau gets its information

Bureaus do not follow you around — they receive data from the credit providers you deal with. Banks, retailers and other lenders are required to submit your payment information, which is shared through the South African Credit and Risk Reporting Association (SACRRA) and distributed to the registered bureaus. Each bureau then applies its own scoring model to that data.

Your rights under the National Credit Act

The law gives you real protection here:

  • One free credit report a year from each registered bureau (National Credit Act, Section 72).
  • The right to accurate information — bureaus must keep your data accurate and up to date (Section 70).
  • The right to dispute anything that is wrong, outdated or does not belong to you. The bureau must investigate and respond within 20 business days.

If you find something incorrect on your record, you don’t have to accept it. We can help you lodge a credit bureau dispute, or start with a full credit profile review so you know exactly what each bureau is holding.

Frequently asked questions

More than fifty are registered with the NCR, but four handle most consumer credit: TransUnion, Experian, XDS and VeriCred (VCCB). Compuscan is now part of Experian.
No. Credit bureaus are private companies. They are, however, registered with and regulated by the National Credit Regulator under the National Credit Act.
You are entitled to one free report a year from each bureau. You can request it directly from TransUnion, Experian, XDS or VeriCred, online, by app, by phone or in person.
Not always. Some lenders report to only one or two bureaus, so your record — and your score — can differ between them. Checking more than one gives the fullest picture.
Yes. You have the right to dispute incorrect, outdated or fraudulent listings, and the bureau must investigate within 20 business days.
