A credit score is a three-digit number that summarises your credit history into a single measure of how likely you are to repay what you borrow. Lenders use it as a quick guide to risk: the higher your score, the lower the risk you appear, and the better the rates and approval odds you can access.
Importantly, you don’t have just one score. Each bureau calculates its own using its own data and model, so your TransUnion, Experian and XDS scores can differ.
Most South African scores run from 0 to 999, though the exact scale depends on the bureau (Experian’s consumer scale, for example, tops out lower). As a widely used reference, TransUnion publishes these bands:
For context, the average South African score sits in the “average” band, around the low 600s. As a rough rule of thumb, a score above about 650 is generally considered good, and above 750 excellent.
It varies by lender and product, but broadly: most banks look for a score around 680 or higher for a standard home loan, and vehicle-finance providers often prefer applicants above roughly 650. The main factors are:
Under the National Credit Act you are entitled to one free credit report a year from each bureau, and several bureaus and apps let you check your score for free more often. Checking your own score does not lower it. Once you can see it, you can act on it — read how to improve your credit score next.
